NVS Class 6 Eligibility Criteria
Parents should verify every eligibility condition before submitting the form. Provisional selection may be cancelled if the age, residence, schooling, category or rural-area information does not match the original documents.
1. District and Residence Requirement
Admission is district-specific. The child should apply for the JNV connected with the district of bona fide residence.
The student must be studying in Class V during the academic session 2026-27 in a government, government-aided or recognised school.
A student attending a recognised school in a neighbouring district may remain eligible for the JNV of the residence district when the school is within 10 kilometres of the actual residence and the condition is verified by NVS.
Valid residence proof for the concerned district must be produced after provisional selection.
2. Date of Birth
The candidate must have been born between 1 May 2015 and 31 July 2017. Both dates are inclusive. The same age condition applies to General, SC, ST, OBC and Divyang candidates.
3. Schooling Requirement
The child must study in Class V for the full 2026-27 academic session and successfully complete it before admission to Class VI.
The child must have studied and passed Classes III, IV and V from a government, government-aided or recognised school, spending one full academic session in each class.
Students who skipped Class III or Class IV are not eligible.
A student who passed Class V earlier, repeated Class V or already appeared in JNVST Class VI cannot apply again.
Eligible NIOS students holding the required B Certificate may apply subject to age, residence and other conditions.
Seat Availability and Reservation
There are 665 functional Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. A maximum of 80 students may be admitted to Class VI in each school. NVS may reduce the intake to 40 or withhold admission, examination or result for a particular JNV when adequate accommodation or other facilities are unavailable.
Category / Quota | Reservation Rule |
|---|---|
Rural candidates | At least 75% of seats in a district are filled from rural-area candidates. Remaining seats are open on merit to eligible rural and urban candidates. |
SC / ST | Reservation is based on district population, subject to the minimum national averages and combined limits prescribed by NVS. |
OBC | 27% reservation according to the Central OBC List. State-only OBC status may not be sufficient. |
Girls | At least one-third of total seats are filled by girls under NVS selection criteria. |
Divyang candidates | Reservation is provided according to Government of India norms for eligible benchmark disabilities. |
OBC certificate warning: Candidates claiming OBC reservation must possess a valid Central OBC certificate issued by the competent authority within the prescribed period. Candidates without the required Central certificate should apply as unreserved.
